Festive Garlic Bread for the Holidays

This pull-apart garlic bread features fluffy dough infused with garlic and herbs, baked into a Christmas tree shape. The recipe takes about 1 hour from start to finish and serves 8 people.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, salt, and sugar. Add warm water and olive oil, and mix until a dough forms.
  2. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.
  3. Make Garlic Butter: In a small bowl, mix melted butter, minced garlic, parsley, oregano, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes.
  4. Shape the Bread: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small balls. Dip each ball into the garlic butter mixture and arrange them in a tree shape on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. You will want to aim for a short tree to avoid it toppling over or you can also arrange in a “lay flat” version on your baking sheet, I usually do the lay flat version as it makes for a nice presentation on a wooden board or Chrsitmas tray.
  5. Let it Rise Again: Cover the shaped bread with a towel and let it rise for another 15-20 minutes.
  6. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the garlic bread for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. If desired, sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese before serving.
  7. Serve: Allow to cool slightly before serving. Pull apart the pieces and enjoy warm.
