These cookies are made from a buttery sugar cookie dough, cut into football shapes, and decorated with smooth royal icing. The recipe yields about 24 cookies and is ideal for sharing during the big game.

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • Royal icing (prepared with powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water)
  • Food coloring (for decorating)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and extracts. Gradually add the flour mixture until combined.
  2. Chill the Dough: Divide the dough into two discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  3. Roll and Cut: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Use a football-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Bake: Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Allow cookies to cool completely on a wire rack.
  5. Decorate: Once cooled, prepare royal icing and divide it into bowls for coloring. Use piping bags to decorate the cookies with football designs, allowing each layer to dry before adding more details.
