Easy Traditional Stuffing Recipe

This stuffing features a mix of cubed bread, sautéed onions, celery, and a blend of herbs, all baked to golden perfection. The recipe takes about 1 hour from start to finish and serves 8 people.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf of bread (about 12 cups cubed, preferably day-old)
- 1 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 cup celery, finely chopped
- 1 cup dried cranberries (soak in warm water for 20 minutes to plump)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 1 tablespoon dried sage
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 cup cooked sausage (optional)
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
- 1/2 cup dried cranberries or raisins (optional)
Instructions
- Prep the Bread: If the bread is not day-old, cut it into cubes and let it dry out for a few hours or toast it in the oven at 250°F (120°C) for about 30 minutes.
- Sauté Vegetables: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery, and sauté until softened (about 5-7 minutes), then add the cranberries and saute for another 2 minutes.
- Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, herbs, salt, pepper, and any optional ingredients like sausage or nuts. Pour in the broth gradually, mixing until the bread is moistened but not soggy.
- Bake the Stuffing: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the stuffing mixture to a greased baking dish and cover with foil. Bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- Serve: Let the stuffing cool slightly before serving. It can be served alongside turkey or chicken, or enjoyed on its own.
